Privacy, in plain words
- Stored: your email address, your marks (status, rating, dates, how each was made), the books you added, which devices are signed in (a hashed session id, a browser name, last seen), and 30 days of daily snapshots of your marks so a mistake can be undone by support.
- Never stored: a password, your name, a photo, your IP address (a hash of it lives for one hour for the sign-in rate limit, then expires), what you searched for, which pages you looked at.
- Never sent anywhere: no analytics, no ad or social trackers, no third-party scripts, no email open tracking. Open Library is called by the server for book data, never by your browser, so it sees the server, not you. Amazon SES, which delivers the sign-in email, sees your address and the link, nothing about your books, and open/click tracking is switched off.
- Sessions last 90 days from last use; sign out ends one, "sign out everywhere" ends all.
- Deleting your library erases it at once. Deleting your account closes it at once and erases everything on day 30 (sign in before then to cancel), snapshots included. Shared book data (the catalogue) keeps nothing about you.
- No ads, no spam, no selling or sharing data. If any of this changes, every account gets an email first and can download and leave.
